The saying “You’re what you eat” may sound cliche, but eating healthy meals go a long way in not only preserving your health but, also giving your skin this radiant look. Antioxidants, like beta carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and vitamin B, function as bodyguards to your skin cells, protecting them from damage.

To get these essential nutrients, add these foods to your shopping list and let the glow begin:

Water

Drinking water is the simplest and fastest way to boost your glow and keep your skin tissues functioning well. Water is known to keep the skin cells hydrated and moisturized which prevents blemishes, pimples, darkness, and wrinkles. Your skin can get glow and softness just by drinking plenty of water.

Usually, the stomach digests every eaten thing and converts it into some hormones, liquids, fluids, energy, and waste. Water plays a primary part in circulating and transforming these fluids throughout the body. Your skin needs several nutrients, natural substances, liquids, and hormones for lasting glow and softness. So, water will bring every mineral and fluid to the skin and the rest of the body.

Pro Tip: Try adding fresh citrus or berries to your water. As much as possible, drink a minimum of eight cups – that is about two liters. If you exercise or sweat a lot, you can drink more than that.

Watermelon

Watermelon is a natural toner that refreshes the skin. Two cups of cubed watermelon equal a full cup of water that can help you (and therefore your skin cells) stay hydrated. Also, antioxidants like Vitamin C and Beta-carotene gives your skin that natural glow. Try cutting it up and storing it in the freezer for a treat, you can use it to make a smoothie or eat it just like that.

Oats

Instead of taking those sugary bowls of cereal as breakfast, try taking a bowl of plain oats, and your skin will thank you for this. This food is low in sugar, unlike foods high in sugar which leads to an increase in blood sugar, promotes inflammation, and has been shown to be associated with acne breakouts. Its antioxidants – selenium helps protect cells from damage (the type that could ultimately lead to mutation and tumor growth).

Grapes

Grapes contain ellagic acid and resveratrol that aid in maintaining skin cell regeneration. Grapes contain certain enzymes that bring about the anti-inflammatory effect in our body. As such, it brings about relief to the arteries, promotes heart health, and helps in other repair functions of the body.

Citrus fruits

Citrus fruits can also help dark spots and give the necessary skin glow. Dark spots are caused by increased pigment production due to Ultraviolet (UV) light exposure i.e. from the sun. Antioxidants like vitamin C can help calm inflammation, brighten dark spots, and even your skin complexion. Foods like oranges, tangerines, and grapefruits should be your top snacks.

Avocados

If you have dry skin, then avocado is for you. It contains high levels of healthy oils and vitamin E, which provides the building blocks for healthy skin cell function. It also helps improve hydration.

You don’t need to invest in antiageing products, instead, avocado is a better investment. This fruit is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, which have been proven to hydrate and shield the skin by lowering the risk of premature aging caused by ultraviolet radiation. Avocados’ potent source of fats also helps you absorb many fat-soluble vitamins that also help protect your skin from sun damage.

Sweet potatoes

For those people with oily skin, sweet potato is a good option. Sweet potatoes are a great option because of their high levels of vitamin A. Vitamin A helps to reduce oil production in the skin and is used to treat acne. Carrots are another solid vitamin A option.

Carrots

Carrots are vibrant foods in achieving skin glow. They are good for your eyes and good for clearing up breakouts. It contains beta-carotene, a Vitamin A antioxidant that prevents overproduction of cells in the skin’s outer layer. That means fewer flaky dead cells that otherwise could combine with sebum to clog your pores. Plus, vitamin A plays an essential role in reducing the development of skin-cancer cells. It’s a win-win with this best food for the skin.

Paw-Paw

This fruit contains active enzymes that pass on their health benefits. One enzyme, chymopapain, relieves inflammation—a common source of skin conditions. And another enzyme, papain, can help remove blemishes and even treat acne when applied topically as the enzyme removes skin cells that can clog pores.

Add these foods to your diet and watch your skin glow. Once you make changes to your diet, don’t expect an overnight miracle. It takes six weeks for new skin to emerge up to the surface, so the visible benefits from dietary changes will take just as long. For persistent skin conditions, talk to a doctor or consider seeing a dermatologist.
